Volitan sounds like a household cleaning product, or a cartoon baddie. It's neither though: instead, it's a concept boat designed by Turkish company Designnobis Studio, and Volita comes from a word meaning 'flying fish'.
It's been designed to be as planet-friendly as possible, using a mixture of sails, wind power and solar energy to run itself, with a networked computer controlling everything. You can imagine the reactions of hardened sailors, aaaarrrring into their grog at the thought of computers messing everything up. But there you have it.
Volitan can operate in up to 60-knot winds, and when the sea's a bit too choppy, its wings fold up against the boat. It's a concept, so there's no chance of buying one in the immediate future. But who knows, these could be ten-a-penny in Turkish waters in a few years' time. Maybe.
