Why blowing your iPod budget on Apple shares could have made you rich

ipod-pricing-swizz.gifAn enterprising Digg user has been doing some number-crunching around the ongoing rise in Apple's share price, and they've come up with something interesting.

Apparently, if you'd spent $399 on Apple shares in 2001 instead of buying an iPod, by now, those shares would be worth more than $10,000. Zounds! Of course, you wouldn't have had the pleasure of an iPod for those six years since, but ten thousand smackers says you wouldn't mind too much...

That's a bit disingenuous if you ask me - of course any consumer good is going to decrease in value over time (until it becomes an antique and is valuable again) - and especially with electronic goods where Moore's Law and advances in display/storage technology. And of course, if everyone had bought Apple shares instead of iPods they would never have got their return anyway...
