Pentax claims it has a compact to take on the digital SLRs with the introduction of the 12 megapixel Optio A40.

The A40 features a new 1/1.7 CCD image sensor and smc Pentax lens, as well as a new Dynamic Range Adjustment function that prevents white outs and black outs by correcting tones in highlighted or shadowed areas of a subject – good for difficult lighting conditions. There’s also a 2.5-inch LCD, 3x optical zoom and 6x digital zoom, three types of anti-shake technology – Shake Reduction, Digital Shake Reduction and Movie Shake Reduction, plus Face Recognition AF&AE for better people shots and DivX movie recording.

The Optio A40 will be available from November, priced around £219.
