Nokia calls for UK to allocate mobile TV spectrum now

nokia_mobile_tv.jpgAlthough research suggests that Europeans aren't interested in mobile TV (that sucks), that hasn't stopped Nokia calling for Britain to pull its finger out and allocate spectrum to companies so that they can start network building.

Mark Selby, Nokia's VP of multimedia, said he was very worried about the UK's "ludicrous" lack of commitment to mobile TV, citing the possibility that, come the 2012 Olympic Games, mobile users around the world could watch via mobile TV, but not someone in Manchester. This could harm the UK's position in terms of content, creativity, applications, and interactivity.

He said, "UHF in the shape of Channel 36 is available almost now, or will be wholly vacated in early 2009. We know it will take about three years to build out a network to deliver services to 93 percent of the population".

Channel 36 is currently used mainly for airport radar, and falls within the spectrum bands used by terrestrial TV across Europe, according to an Ofcom paper.
