virginmedia.jpgWhile many of us hobble along on 8Mb or lower broadband speeds, three towns in Kent are set to experience 50Mb broadband, courtesy of Virgin Media.

The pilot scheme has already been running in Ashford, with every resident capable of receiving the Virgin Media service now able to sign up. However, there’s no guarantee yet that the £47 per month service will extend beyond the 1st October to 31st December trial period.

Then again, the company are investing heavily in the scheme, with anyone signing up receiving a new modem. Those living in Dover and Folkestone will also be able to sign up for the service.

For those of you bothered about the technicalities of the service, Virgin Media is using DOCSIS (Data Over Cable Service Interface Specifications), a protocol which allows the sending of data signals over the same cabling used for TV signals. The latest version of the standard also increases the upstream speed to around 1.5Mb.

Hopefully, if these trials are successful, more UK towns will see improved broadband speeds next year.
