That's what Games Digest reckons, in a punchy opinion column claiming that the upcoming Halo 3 will be "the kind of game that lifts our favoured form of entertainment onto the same level as sport and the cinema and makes people sit up and take notice".
The hype's starting early on this one, boosted by the fact that the equally high-profile Grand Theft Auto IV has now slipped into 2008. The rumoured Halo movie has apparently been put on ice, and as yet nobody's tried to create a sport based on people running round a pitch dressed as Master Chief (it's a thought though). But I see what they mean.
For me, if Halo 3 follows the pattern established by Halo 2, I'll buy it, fail to get past the tutorial level, spend a humiliating hour online getting my arse shot to bits by teenagers, and then leave it rusting in a box under the bed. But I'm a casual gamer these days...
