Proving that large multinational corporations can sometimes work together for the greater good, Sony, Sharp, and Hitachi have committed to work together to study technology development that will reduce the power consumption of LCD TVs.
As manufacturers create ever larger and higher resolution screens, so their power consumption also rises, and while LCD TVs use less energy than similarly sized CRT TVs, the fact is that many screens are now two or three times larger than any older TV ever was.
The hope is that, by the year 2011, overall power consumption of these flat screen tellies will have been halved. Technologies being studied include the use of energy saving methods for image display, and the use of LEDs for backlighting screens.
