Peter Gabriel goes web 2.0 with hefty cash investment in The Filter

Peter Gabriel is behind a $5m (£2.5m) investment in the music recommendation company The Filter, hoping to widen its scope into digital video and film - and possibly beyond.

If you're not familiar with the company, The Filter is a free download that recommends new music and builds playlists based on your existing library, essentially saving you the hassle of browsing the racks. The site currently has around 150,000 users, but is rapidly expanding - believed to be by a rate of 25,000 per month.

But Gabriel's investment is based on the idea that music is just one area to conquer - everything from TV and film to food and fashion could require a 'guide' for the confused shopper in the coming years. Film and TV is initial target, with an expanded recommendation service a possibility for next year.
