Here's an interesting story that, while of no direct relevance to mobile users in the West, raises some intriguing suggestions for the future. Google has signed a deal with Japanese mobile operator KDDI to launch a branded version of its Gmail email service.
It'll be called 'au one mail', and like Gmail will be accessible online and via mobile phones. It's the first example (as far as I'm aware) of Google launching a white-label version of Gmail, certainly with a mobile operator.
And it makes you think. The European mobile operators have been pretty unsuccessful at launching their own mobile email services, so would it make sense for them to seek similar deals with Google (or, indeed, Yahoo or MSN)? Then again, if my operator Vodafone started offering a Gmail-based email service, I'd probably still stick with the original.
