beatles-ipod.jpgCould there ever be an Apple gadget more desirable than the iPhone? Yep. How about a limited-edition Yellow Submarine iPod, with every single Beatles album preloaded onto it? Oh yes.

There were plenty of rumours about just such a device earlier this year, but nothing came of them. However, according to music industry consultancy Music Ally, the Yellow Submarine iPod may be back on Apple’s roadmap, now that the iPhone launch is out of the way.

What’s more, it’d be launched to tie-in with Beatles tracks finally going on sale on Apple’s iTunes Store, possibly as a one-month exclusive before becoming available through rival digital music services. Kat’s mocked up an image of how the Yellow Sub iPod might look – would you buy one?

  • I would not only buy one of these if in Yellow Submarine style, I almost passed out when I happened upon the image while doing a search for something else.

Yellow Submarine “owns” me – I would have to have one of these, absolutely.

  • Yes! Let’s all “get with the times” and keep buying the same stuff we all own over and over again! We must continually upgrade everything we own when a new format comes out! When we all buy the Beatles remasters then we’ll all buy them again when they are re-released in 5.1 surround sound! And then we can all buy them again when they invent 6.1 surround sound and buy them again when they come out with 10.1 surround sound! BUY! BUY! BUY!!!!! Consume to infinity!!!!!!

    Yeah, that’s a great idea.

  • Luckily for Beatles fans any release is never seen as a “waste of money”. I do not agree and many of the fans I have spoke with do not agree that the newer remasters are an “abomination”!On the contrary there have been many new revelations in the latest mixes.Bottom line if someone doesn’t like something don’t buy it. We beatles fans know all about hype.If you were even ther in the 60’s, the beatles were one of the first bands to utilize hype in the grrandest of ways. Nothing wrong with that unless you are stuck in your ways. Get with the times because nothing new has really been made by the fabs in 37 years. Now where is the Let it Be dvds we have been waiting for. I am sure some will say they prefer thte original version of that as well. When McCartney sang “Can’t Buy Me Love” he wasn’t talking about the Love soundtrack.

  • I still would rather have a CD over an mp3. The new re-mastering will sound terrible. Modern re-mastering sounds atrocious. RCA ruined Elvis Presley’s music by remixing and re-mastering it. You can’t get a decent sounding Rolling Stone album any more because of the poor remixing they did.

Just listen to Love, 1, Yellow Submarine Songtrack and Let It Be …Naked. The re-mastering is an abomination! They are mixed too loud. They sound tinny and all of the subtleties in the original music have been squeezed out. The original CDs sound way better. I would much rather stick with the original George Martin approved CDs with the original mixes that were done in the 1960s.

Don’t be fooled by this marketing gimmick. It is a waste of money. If you want to own all of the Beatles CDs at a cheaper price than what iTunes will offer I suggest you go to e-bay and buy them used. They will be affordable, sound better and you can download them to your iPod right now.

    New is not always better!!!

  • If the Itunes deal does happen, who is to say that The Beatles Estate has not made the provision that the encoded mp3 bitrate for the release will need to be of a higher standard than the norm. I can see this as a demand due to the hard work in remastering that has been going on and it would be a waste to go any lower than 192kbs!

  • Te remastering could improve a alot more the sound quality, and the new high quality(without DRM) mp3 sold by EMI are from almost the same quality of the CD ones, but of course the CD’s aren’t remastered and the sound quality suffers alot.

Plus, nobody has the whole collection and have it bundled with the Ipod would be far more cheaper than buy all the CD’s or buy each song on the Store.

  • I’m not sure I understand what all of the fuss is here. If people are so desperate to have the Beatles on their iPods, why not buy the CDs right now and download them? It’s pretty easy to do and costs the same as it will cost when Apple makes them available from iTunes. In fact, the current Beatles CDs will sound better than the re-mastered Beatles from iTunes. ITunes Mp3s have extremely poor sound quality.

“When creating an MP3 file, there is a trade-off between the amount of space used and the sound quality of the result. Typically, the creator of the MP3 file is allowed to set a bit rate, which specifies how many kilobits the file may use per second of audio, for example, when ripping a compact disc to this format. The lower the bit rate used, the lower the audio quality will be, but the smaller the file size. Likewise, the higher the bit rate used, the higher quality, and therefore, larger the file size the resulting MP3 will be.”

ITunes, from what I understand, uses a low bit rate. So, why buy songs that will not sound very good. Or is everyone really excited to be able to buy only “Bungalow Bill” for 99 cents?

  • I’m just curious as to why they chose Yellow Submarine?

I mean Abbey Road, the White Album, Let it Be or even Pepper (actually, Pepper would make GREAT iPod imo) would be more ideal than Yellow Submarine.

Wouldn’t it be cool if they also included bits and pieces of old interviews as well?

  • Oy! LoopRumors didn’t break that! I did! Compare the dates!

  • Well, because YOU have all the CDs, nobody else in the world could possibly be different than YOU! I mean, the audacity to think people don’t imitate you!

Talk about a cliché on the Internet, this one about “nobody could possibly want the Beatles on iTunes,” takes the cake.

Oh yeah, and re-mastering all the music couldn’t possibly make me want to replace my vinyl copy of the White album? Nah. Andy already has all the CDs. What could I possibly want with the Beatles on iTunes? I’m so glad he pointed out he has all the CDs.

  • If this iPod is multitouch with a bigger screen and Wifi (basically iPhone without the cell phone) the… yeah, I’d get it, even if it were yellow.

  • I read recently that the Beatles catalogue is being remastered for a new digital release. I think that’s the point to the iTunes release. The sound quality of the CDs sounds pretty poor compared with modern releases.

Also, let’s bear in mind that not everybody already owns the whole Beatles catalogue, nor would they want to. An iTunes release allows people to pick the tracks they like to buy rather than having to buy things like “Rocky Racoon”.

Personally, having heard the improved quality on Love, I’m waiting for the remasters to appear on CD.

  • Andy – A lot of people aren’t in their right mind I suppose. I think the Beatles songs will do very well on iTunes.

I actually may consider getting this – It would be sort of a cute novelty item. And although I of course already have the entire Beatles catalogue …They are a bit shoddy as far as the naming and what not. That goes for my whole MP3 collection. I first started it back in 1998? So things have changed a lot since then. Some of those older songs sound really bad .. and are named wrong.

I guess I’ve really said too much?

  • Why would I buy this? I already own every CD by the Beatles and CDs sound vastly superior to mp3s. If I owned an ipod I would just load in the Beatles CDs I already own.

Why is the media continuing to make such a HUGE deal over this? Nobody in their right mind cares about the Beatles coming to itunes!
