Sony to close its Connect online music store

sony-connect.jpgFew gadget-lovers will lament the passing of Sony Connect, an online store that was famously less user-friendly than iTunes and other rivals.

Reports this weekend suggest that Sony is winding down the service, although its engineering team will be switched to supporting Sony’s PlayStation division – presumably this means audio and video downloads on the PS3’s PlayStation Store.

Connect was always hamstrung by internal politics at Sony – the same ones responsible for Sony’s first batch of digital music players forcing users to convert MP3 files to Sony’s Atrac format before they’d play on the devices. Still, shutting it now just as the music and video download markets are gathering pace is an interesting decision.
