Philips has continued its busy week, launching its first Network Attached Storage (NAS) hard drive – the SPD8020 – for file sharing between different home computers.

The aluminium-cased drive connects to a router as opposed to a single machine, which means it can be accessed by any computer on that network, with “one-click” installation making it easy to connect. There’s 500GB of storage, enough for 500,000 photos, three weeks of uncompressed video or 125,000 songs. And if that’s not enough, USB connectivity allows you to boost it further.

When coupled with a digital media adapter connected to a TV, the SPD8020 can be used as a fully functional media server to stream music or video throughout the home. And you can access files from any location in the world, using the NAS drive’s built-in FTP server together with an internet connection. Expected in the coming weeks, it will retail for 229 Euros or $259.
