Facebook is definitely the big buzz right now for social networking, having doubled in size since opening up to non-students last year. Last week, the site opened itself up to third-party developers, letting them create 'applications' (i.e. widgets) for Facebook users to embed in their profiles.
There are already dozens of them available on the site, so I thought it was worth rounding up the ten most popular (by number of users) as well as the ten newest at the time of writing.
1. iLike. Add music to your profile, find your favourite concerts, trouser free MP3 files, and test your wits against friends in a Music Challenge. 608,435 users at the time of writing. Get it
2. Horoscopes. Made by RockYou, this widget embeds a horoscope on your Facebook profile for stargazing purposes (i.e. finding out if leaving the house this Thursday will result in you being run over by a rhino). 258,957 users. Get it
3. Games. Now this one's cool – made by Bunchball, it lets you play a bunch of games within Facebook, including multiplayer ones against other users. 121,260 users. Get it
4. Picnik. Edit photos within Facebook, with features like cropping, rotating, resizing, red-eye removal, borders, and digitally removing your fugly ex from photos you uploaded last year. Well, that last one's not automatic... 104,754 users. Get it
5. The Compass. Created by the Washington Post, this is a simple ten-question survey that assesses your political views, then creates a compass showing how liberal or nazi conservative you are, to be displayed on your profile. 93,462 users. Get it
6. SlideShows. Another app from RockYou, this one turns your Facebook photos into animated slideshows and photo-strips. 74,752 users. Get it
7. Your Hottest Friend. Like an Am I Hot Or Not? widget, except you're voting on how purdy your friends are, rather than strangers. If Facebook sees a flood of people removing friends in the coming weeks, it's probably this app's fault. 66,347 users. Get it
8. Flixter Movies. Rate and review films, then share the content with your friends. Cinema buffs will clog it up with discussions about Citizen Kane, everyone else will use it to lech on Johnny Depp / Keira Knightly in the new Pirates Of The Carribbean flick. 63,536 users. Get it
9. Extended Info. Facebook profiles let you specify your interests, activities and a general About Me field, but this application lets you add whatever fields you want. Favourite fish, anyone? Just me then. 51,988 users. Get it
10. Uber Music Player. Another music player with dozens of customisable skins, and the ability to add playlists or create your own. 31,309 users. Get it
And as a bonus extra, here's the ten newest Facebook apps at the time of writing:
1. Deejay (show your fave tunes as a list)
2. del.icio.us (your latest social bookmarks)
3. RSSbook (add RSS feeds to your Facebook profile)
4. Slideshows (more photo slideshow malarkey)
5. Digg.com (show your five most recently Dugg stories)
6. VoicePlayer (share voice comments with Facebook friends)
7. Trips (travel app to see who else is going where you are)
8. Lending Club (borrow money from other Facebook users)
9. Tag (let people voice-call you from your profile)
10. WantList (beg for stuff)
