Researchers at Sheffield University announced they’ve created a synthetic alternative to human blood. Made literally of plastic with an iron atom at the core that carries oxygen like regular blood does, it also is lighter than conventional water-based blood and doesn’t require refrigeration. Not only would it be much more practical in war zones, it could mean an end to blood drives, expensive blood storage, blood-type compatibility issues, diseases spread by contaminated blood, and puppies for everyone whether they want one or not. A sample is on display at the Science Museum in London from 22 May onward. [GT]
