Apple has extended its Mac Pro range of desktop computers with a new 8-core machine, featuring two 3.0GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon 5300 series processors.

Added to this, the machine comes with 8MB of L2 cache per processor (16MB total), 128-bit SSE3 vector engine, 64-bit data paths and registers, energy efficiency optimisation, 1.33GHz, and 64-bit dual independent frontside buses. It will take up to 16GB of 667MHz DDR2 memory.

Other specification are much as before.

Interestingly, the new Mac Pro appears on the US Apple site, with a standard 8-core setup costing just under $4,000, and yet the UK store doesn’t yet offer the new configuration as an option. It’s likely to add over a grand to the standard price, though, when it becomes available here.
