Ginza, Japan, has been plastered with thousands of RFIDs in order to monitor everything from how well tourists are being treated, to the history of the Mitsukoshi department store. Anyone who has a suitably equipped receiver can get completely bombarded with an endless stream of Ginza-specific information simply by wandering around. Though still in the experimental stages, it’s available in four languages, and cities abroad are observing with great interest. Yet another opportunity for robots to supplant man! [GT]
