dvd.jpgCSS Managed Recording, a technology allowing films to be downloaded from the Internet and burnt to DVD using the same content protection system as commercial DVDs, was approved by the DVD Forum yesterday.

The main requirement is that different blank DVD media must be used, so picking up an existing pack of blank DVDs won’t work. These discs should be compatible with most consumer equipment.

The DVD Copy Control Association, who proposed the technology, said that take up of the service was likely to be slow, with the first usage being by professional use, such as kiosks in shops where consumers can purchase and burn discs, rather than at home.

As well as the convenience some consumers may gain from being able to download regular films from the Net, the system might also be useful for offering niche content that’s not viable to sell on DVD through conventional means.
