CES 2007: Nokia confirms N800 web tablet – offers free Wi-Fi too
Well all the rumours turned out to be true and Nokia has taken the wraps off its next generation internet tablet the N800. The successor to the 770 isn’t quite the major overhaul we were expecting but it does have some decent new features and Nokia has certainly smartened up the design. Instead of the rather sober black finish of the 770, the N800 is a much more funky silver chrome.
In terms of it basic functionality Nokia hasn’t changed the device a great deal. It still harnesses Wi-Fi, or a mobile phone connection, to access the web, and comes with a solid selection of features including an RSS reader, email client and a camera.
The big difference is that it has an improved QWERTY keyboard. Alas not a full pop out one, but a full screen one that allows the user to finger type. It’ll be interesting to see how I get on with this when I get to trial the device this afternoon.
Nokia has also ensured the device is compatible with many key web based applications. Most importantly it will run Skype to enable users to make VoIP calls. It also works with music download service Rhapsody and can be kitted out with Navicore satellite navigation software.
Like its predecessor the device runs an open source Linux based operating system and the company is encouraging developers to create third party applications for the device.
It goes on sale now for 400 Euros, which we suspect will translate to around £250.
As a rather good incentive to get one, Nokia has teamed up with UK Wi-Fi provider The Cloud to offer as month’s worth of free wireless web access to N800 owners.
