FujiFilm has announced its FinePix Z5fd digital camera, the first in the “Z” range to offer a hardware-based Face Detection technology.

It comes in three colours: Raspberry Red, Mocha Brown, and Silver.

Features include 3x optical zoom, 6.3 megapixel, ISO 1600, intelligent flash, and a new blog mode “for the MySpace generation” that will adjust image settings for posting online. It has a 2.5 inch scratch resistant LCD screen.

The hardware-based face detection technology can capture up to ten faces in a frame, optimising focus and exposure to take the best picture. Thanks to its Real Photo Processor II technology it can do this in a zippy 0.05 seconds.

When Face Detection mode is turned on, target-like squares appear to show that it is locked on to faces. In playback mode, pressing the Face Detection button causes the camera to auto-zoom to each face in turn for easy review.

Fujifilm’s sixth generation Super CCD HR is a unique hexagonal shape, with a larger surface area than traditional sensors, enabling it to capture more light from the Fujinon lens. The Real Photo Processor II enables impressive operation speed and features an enhanced dual-noise reduction system that maximises the effectiveness of the camera’s high ISO capability.

It can also capture movies at 30 fps with sound. It has a 26MB internal memory.

It will be available from January 2007, price to be confirmed.
