Nokia World: Nokia declares war on the iPod!

l_tommi_mustonen_lowres.jpgOr, in their words: "I don't see any reason for standalone MP3 players to exist in the long-term. There's no reason for standalone non-connected MP3 players. You have a worse experience."

That's what Nokia's Tommi Mustonen said earlier this afternoon, admittedly in answer to a direct question from a journalist on whether Nokia is predicting the death of the standalone MP3 player. Gotta love those leading questions.

And happily he had the balls to take the question head-on, although not so far as to offer Steve Jobs out for a fight while smashing an iPod to bits with a big hammer. If I ever go into PR, that's the kind of thing I'd suggest. Meanwhile, Mustonen also outlined some of the other stuff Nokia is doing in the music field.

YouTube Video of the Day - 'Ghost Car'

When I was first shown this, and told that it was about a 'ghost car', I assumed that it would be one of those videos with a shrieking ghoul at the end. Well, spookily enough it isn't! It's filmed from a police car dashboard where, in hot pursuit, the car seemingly drives straight through a solid fence!

Wifi_generic_1One of London's premier tourist and entertainment spots is about to give free, no-catches wi-fi to anyone in the area who wants it.

Tomorrow, Leicester Square will become a wi-fi hotspot courtesy of PR company Four Communications. They say "No longer will you have to purchase a coffee, a burger, or confusingly priced vouchers to access the web." Amen to that.

NEC have announced that it is targeting its latest range of large plasma displays at the home theatre enthusiast who is 'looking for the best in contrast, brightness, clarity, and performance'.

The new XR range of PlasmaSync screens come in three sizes: 42, 50 and 60 inches.

ruud-gullit.jpgThe vast majority of the Nokia World conference is tech-focused, as you'd expect. But I've just come out of a strange session hosted by Clive Anderson, which focused on how celebrities are using mobile technology. Actually, it was more like an episode of Grumpy Old Men/Women, given that they were moaning quite a lot.

Anyway, Ruud Gullit was here live, in the flesh, talking about how he uses technology, and in particular how he doesn't like to read manuals when he buys a new gadget. "I think of it as a puzzle," he said. "I open it, put it on and then try to find my way through. If there's really something I can't find how to do, then I look in the manual."

Right now, tens of thousands of Newcastle United fans are punching their keyboards in frustration and wishing he'd done that when he was in charge of their football club. But he also had other stuff to say about the role gadgets play in a happy household. Or otherwise.

YouTube Video of the Day - The World's Worst Burglar

If you have to go and break into grocery stores, chances are, you didn't listen at school. So, what of those crooks who aren't even smart enough to rob? Well watch this hilarious video and find out!

accusticartscd.jpg

Accustic Arts have released their upgraded CD player 1 Mk 2, an exceptionally high-end CD player for true music lovers (you'll have to be - I'll tell you the price at the end).

What you get for that cash is a 24 Bit / 192 kHz upsampling top-loading CD Player that positions your CDs in the drive using a precise magnetic puck that's supposed to guarantee ideal disc-reading conditions (try getting your mini hi-fi player to do that).

pp01.jpgInTempo have teamed up with MyBiggerPicture.com to offer their PP-01 digital (DAB) radio with a customisable front screen.

The PP-01 is a slim and portable DAB and FM radio with built-in rechargeable battery that gives 20 hours of playback, LCD screen for station and artist names, and pre set buttons to store up to 12 stations (6 DAB, 6 FM).

My bluebook - online back-up for O2 phone customers

If you're an O2 customer worried about losing your mobile data, you might want to try My bluebook, a new service that allows customers to store personal information through a free, web-based account.

My bluebook can keep track of contacts, text messages, pictures, and video clips for personal reference or as a means of sharing with friends and family. According to O2, 80-85% of mobile users surveyed want to be able to back up their contacts easily, 25% want to be able to backup photos, while 10-15% want to store their sms messages securely.

Portable audio players keep getting smaller (we'll soon be able to have them implanted into our fingers). The latest contender for the "world's smallest..." title is the Kenwood Media Keg HD10GB7, just launched in Japan.

It features a 10GB disk drive, probably around 1.8 inches in size, along with a 1.5-inch screen. Total dimensions 62 × 44 × 17mm and weighing just 78g. It's good for both MP3 and WMA, with support for DRM subscription services. But the best thing of all is the battery life, which is 24 hours after a recharge via USB.

We've featured Indiestore in the past - it's essentially a site to sell your music without record company involvement. Well, it's just made flogging your tunes even easier by introducing a MySpace plug-in to sell your tracks via your own networking page.

That's good for two reasons. Firstly, you can make cash, up to 80 per cent of the price. And secondly, you can get famous, as all sales go towards a position in the official download charts. The plug-in, which you can add just by copying some HTML code into your page, adds an indiestore Flash Player to your site, which lists all the tracks you have on indiestore. Visitors can listen to the tracks using the Player - and if they're interested in purchasing a track, click ‘buy’ and be taken to your checkout.

Vespa-like motorised scooter for your kids

It's not all big boys toys over at Shiny's lifestyle site Brandish - they also find room for the little people - check out this kids' Vespa-style scooter.

Yes, forget the pedalling, this scoot has a two-speed gearbox, offering speeds up to 5mph. But don't worry - there's also brakes, lights and a horn for added safety. And a rechargeable battery too.

Find out more about this and check out the other great articles and features over at Brandish.

Fujifilm launches Pivi MP-300 portable printer in Japan

It's not just the digital cameras that are getting smaller, the same is happening to the photo printers too. The smallest of which has got to be Fujifilm's Pivi MP-300, just launched in Japan.

It comes in at just 146 x 102 x 29mm, and weighs 225g. It connects to the camera via infrared or through USB PictBridge for printing - no Bluetooth though. And there is another problem - don't expect big expansive glossy photos, as you're going to get business card-sized snaps. But what did you expect from a camera this small?

Nokia World: Two mobile phones and one DJ Slow...

nokiaworld-dj.jpgVellu Maurola is a very cool man indeed. Not just because he has cool hair, calls himself DJ Slow, and is DJing at the Nokia World conference using two N91 mobile phones connected up to a set of decks. Although that is pretty cool. But because he made them himself. I caught up with the Finnish DJ as he dropped (is that the right word?) Peggy Lee's 'Fever', to find out more.

"It's a mobile setup that I invented a couple of years ago," he says. "You have these MP3 controllers in the software, and the phone is connected via USB as an external hard drive, so you can browse the songs. I only need one device to play the songs, but there are two reasons why I have two. First, if one crashes, I can use the other one. And second, it looks much better!"

MPIO FY700 2GB wearable MP3 player

Part music player, part style statement - the MPIO FY700 2GB MP3 player has everything you'd expect from a portable music player, along with a set of accessories that make it wearable, either round your neck or attached to you or your bag.

As a music player, it's compatible with MP3 and WMA, along with DRM, if you've got a subscription service. There's also an FM radio, along with FM and voice recording that features Smart Recording - starting and stopping recording based on sound detection.

Mustek launches MP70D and MP80D portable DVD players

Whilst the majority of the industry throw themselves at digital video clips on the go, Mustek plods a more traditional path, sticking to the old TV/DVD combo for when you're out and about, the latest of which are the MP70D and MP80D portable DVD players.

There are two benefits with these devices. Firstly, the bigger screen and secondly, integrated DVB-T receivers for digital TV on the go. The Mustek MP70D has a 7-inch widescreen LCD display for watching your TV and DVD, with support for DivX and JPEG files as well as music. The player also has anti-shock protection, an EPG and the ability to store up to 1000 programmes.

Nokia promises WiMAX handsets in 2008

l_Kallasvuo_OP_Nokia017.jpgNokia's president and CEO Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo is just doing his keynote speech at Nokia World, and he's just said that the company will bring out WiMAX-enabled handsets in 2008, which would be able to hook into citywide Wi-Fi networks using the technology.

Also, the company predicts that this year alone, 970 million mobiles will be sold globally – this is from all manufacturers, not just Nokia – and that 65% of these are people upgrading to new handsets. Kallasvuo also said that Nokia reckons the number of people with a mobile phone will break the 3 billion mark sometime next year, and will pass 4 billion in 2010.

Other than that, he basically gave an overview of what Nokia is up to, which covered existing announcements (e.g. working with Flickr and the new Music Recommenders community), and an interesting snippet about Mastercard running a trial with Nokia to let people pay for stuff in 32,000 shops by touching their phones to a reader. Oh, and he also said Nokia is seeing the first opportunities to use GPS for photo-sharing, gaming and messaging applications.
