HP will next month begin shipping internal DVD writers that can burn at 18x speed. And if that’s not enough, the drive, known as the HPdvd940i, will also support the LightScribe label etching system for creating a design for your disc.

The news comes from Lite-On, the drive manufacturer that’s making them for HP, which says the new drive speed will be HP’s standard. The drive is compatible with all major DVD and CD recordable and rewriteable formats, as well as dual-layer media. The etching process is simple – once your disc is burned, just flip it over to personalise it.

Price is still to be confirmed.
