Royal Scottish National Orchestra launches online music service

It’s probably fair to say that classical and operatic music is less well represented on the web, and even then it’s probably a mixture of quality from different orchestras.

The Royal Scottish National Orchestra has decided to put its vast archive of music online for streaming and download. For £7.49 per month members get 24 hour access to streaming music, plus 8 downloads per month to keep.

The collection includes classical, jazz, blues, world music and nostalgia, and is some 50,000 tracks strong. They currently stream at 64k/sec, which they say is between FM and CD quality. They also say that they’ll improve streaming rates as broadband speeds increase.

It’s cool to see some (arguably) more niche players entering the digital streaming and download market.
