With support for Sony’s UMD disc dropping, the Japanese giant seems to trying another way of feeding pre-recorded movies to the PSP handheld console – via Memory Stick.

In the US, the company has announced a pair of what it describes as "entertainment packs" which offer either a 1GB and a 2GB Memory Stick Pro Duo with a free copy of XXX: State of the Union, SWAT, The Grudge or Hitch on DVD. Buyers can unlock and transfer a pre-ripped PSP-friendly copy of the movie of their choice. The Memory Stick works in any compatible device, but the video will only play on the PSP. Buyers have until October 31st to unlock their free film – then the unlock code expires.

The price, dependent on your Memory Stick size, is $60 or $100, which in comparison to standalone Stick prices, isn’t bad – the value of the 2GB pack is certainly better than the 1GB bundle, with the latter costing around $15 more than a Stick without the movie – which means it isn’t exactly a free movie.
