We previewed Altec Lansing’s iM9 iPod speaker system way back in January at the CES. Well, this durable sound system has at last made it to the UK.

The iM9 is a strange beast – a cross between a rucksack and a speaker system, though they do come apart if you just want the speaker. However, it does mean it’s ideal for taking outdoors to blast out your music, especially as the actual unit is shock-resistant, with an outer casing made predominantly of rubber – so it should be safe from the odd bump and occasional accident. It’s also fairly compact – folding to a size of 11-inches wide, 3-inches deep, and 7.8-inches high, with a total weight of around 4lbs (1.8kg).

Internally, it features an Advanced Class D amplifier for plenty of power, along with MaxxBass technology for a solid bass without a subwoofer. There’s a built-in iPod docking station for data transfer and iPod recharge, an input jack for second device connection (including CD and DVD players) and you should get around 24 hours of battery life from the 4 C batteries (not included).

The Altec Lansing iM9 is available now, priced around £135.
