I’ve spent much of this weekend trying to work out some clever way of taking my entire music collection into the garden without it involving carrying out an entire stereo system or several metres of cabling. I’ll bore you another the day with the end result, but suffice to say it wasn’t as simple as loading up a load of tracks onto my nano and sticking it into a portable speaker system like this Macally IP-N111 portable system.

The IPN-1111 boasts of 800mW power output per channel for a decent stereo sound – and as it’s so compact, you can take it out and about when powered by three AA batteries (which are included). The manufacturers reckon the unit can function for up to 10 hours non-stop, which isn’t bad, but it’s as well to buy some rechargeables if you’re going to use it regularly.

A docking slot allows you to connect your iPod Nano with access to the main dial of your iPod for controlling your music and accessing the menu. And an on/off switch lets you to save battery life when your mini speakers are not in use.

You can pick up the Macally IP-N111 portable system now for around £30.
