K9 – free internet filtering for the home

We covered a search engine that can rate websites before visiting yesterday, but here’s another solution if you’re worried that your kids might visit disreputable websites – the K9 free web filter.

K9 from Blue Coat, which works on Windows XP or 2000 operating systems, can block more than 55 different categories of content. Parents can configure what their children can view, then monitor and control access, allowing them to block offensive or potentially dangerous sites. Sites are checked against the constantly-updated Blue Coat database before each access for their suitability – the database holds around a billion web pages.

If you’re worried about your family’s net access, it’s certainly an option and it’s free. A Mac version is to follow.
