Considering they’re still officially pushing the UMD disc for movies on the go, it seem a bit unusual for Sony to unveil a portable movie device for DVDs, but they have, with the Walkman-branded portable DVD player, set to launch in Japan at the start of June.

The tablet-style player measures 19.3 x 13.6 x 3.3cm – roughly the same size as a DVD case, with a 7-inch LCD screen that offers a 180° viewing angle. One charge of the battery via the bundled recharging station (which also features integrated stereo speakers) gives around three hours play with the backlight on, seven hours with it off.

The Walkman can handle any DVD and CD disc, including recordables and rewriteables and the newly announced DVD+RW dual-layer format. It can also read and playback MP3 files on data discs and supports Dolby Digital and DTS audio tracks.

No official price as yet, but estimates are around the £170 mark.
