I bought into the Mini Disc format heavily - transferring my LPs to MD, then selling those lovely pieces of vinyl. Now I'm left with a pile of discs and a large black deck to play them on. I've given up on it, but Sony soldiers on with the format - albeit a much-improved version (Hi-MD) and has now unveiled its latest portable player - the MZ-RH1.
It's marketed as both portable player and pocket-sized recording studio. The MZ-RH1 can play files downloaded in LinearPCM, ATRAC (ATRAC, ATRAC3, ATRAC3plus) or MP3 format, or which have been recorded onto the device from a live music session. Different recording modes reflect your location (live music, business meeting etc) and there are several listening modes to cover different musical genres.
It's Mac-friendly, backwards compatable to the old MD format (good news for me), has a battery life of 19 hours and each Hi-MD holds 1GB - that's up to 45 hours of music.
You can pick up the MZ-RH1 from May 2006 in Europe. The price is described as "competitive", but no specific price point is available as yet.
