After an extensive period of waiting and rumour the Nikon D200 has finally been officially unveiled. The D200 boasts a 10.2 megapixel CCD sensor which is reinforced by a swift eleven point AutoFocus and the exposures are enhanced by the new 1005-pixel 3D Colour Matrix Metering II system. Another important feature of such a serious SLR is how quickly you can power it up and fire off those pics. Nikon’s latest shouldn’t disappoint: it takes just 0.15 seconds to boot up, has a 50ms shutter release lag time and is then capable of snapping up to 5 frames per second.

Other important peripherals include the 2.5″ LCD screen which has a decent 170 degree viewing angle and the battery is claimed to last for up to 1800 shots per charge. From next spring there will also be an optional WT-3 Wireless Transmitter for the D200 which gives a much improved versatility for transferring your pics to the computer. Other than that it can use the very simple USB 2.0 for connectivity. The Nikon D200 is expect to retail from around £1,000 and should be available from December.
