DS smashing PSP in Japan

In a welcome piece of news, the Nintendo DS is continuing to outsell Sony‘s PSP both in terms of hardware and software in Japan, spiritual homeland of both consoles. PSP games are selling poorly with only four games in the top 50 sales charts, with none in the top 20. The DS, on the other hand is continuing to storm ahead with six titles in the top twenty, with two in the top ten.

Likewise, in console units sold, the DS sold 39,687 units in the last week of May, compared to 21,996 PSPs and 35,143 PS2s, although the recent release of cult Nintendo game Nintendogs would have helped. Good to see that originality in console design can still outperform hardware muscle.
