Samsung's PMC announced

Personal video players

Samsung’s Portable Media Centre, the YH-999, certainly isn’t as highly designed as some of its curvy Yepp music players. We can’t say we’re not slightly disappointed with the boxy casing – it looks more like a Speak & Spell than a personal video player. Still, it does at least seem to be nice and skinny, at just 20.5mm thick. It also won an European Imaging and Sound Association (EISA) award, though, so it can’t be all bad. The 20GB device has room for 80 hours of recorded television or films and plays Windows Media Video at 320 x 240 resolution and 500Kbps. USB on the go lets you connect your digital camera to download images straight onto the player and obviously you can also play MP3 and WMA music files.

  • Why can’t these play music with a slideshow? A silent mp3 player photo player? You bet.

And when playing a slideshow, there’s no shuffle – so you keep seeing the same old pictures each time you start.

Only the photo iPod does it all.

What’s with this sealed battery thing? Overcharging can damage the battery. Can’t carry a spare for extra life.
