Mystery console, Infinium Labs’ Phantom, has a release date. The Phantom launches in the US on 18th November. And it features a highly unusual business model. The console comes free when you sign up for a two-year contract, and it doesn’t have a disc-slot. Instead it relies on your broadband Internet connection to download games and store them to the inbuilt hard drive.

The basic subscription to the service will cost $29.95. This will allow users to download direct to the box and play a basic stable of games. Plus rent “premium” titles at an extra fee. The machine is based on PC architecture, so the titles available should be largely PC-based.
