Text Message Tower

Great story from Ananova (thanks to the Daily Star’s Peter Jenkinson for the tip off).

A 10 metre tall beacon of light that changes colour when certain words are texted (ie. boro or blue) has gone in display in Middlesbrough. Weighing two tons, Spectra-txt is the brainchild of artist Peter Freeman who created it for Middlesbrough Borough Council.

The artist took his inspiration from Captain James Cook’s visit to Tahiti and from the film Blade Runner. During the opening ceremony a text message was sent from Tahiti to mark the stainless steel beacon’s launch.

  • Winchester has had a very similiar tower, also text ‘enabled’ for some time now in the Cathedral Close.

Far more exotic than Middlesbrough methinks….
