The number crunchers over at Nielsen Online are claiming that if we don’t all do something about it quickly, Facebook will overtake Windows Live Messenger as the most popular website in the UK.

Currently 2.4 billion minutes are spent on Facebook each month, with growth in the area of 20% each year. Surprisingly, Google is only at number four on Nielsen’s charts, with just 900 million minutes given to the search engine a month. The decline of MSN and other IM programs has been, in part, attributed to Facebook as people are choosing to keep in touch there, rather than by trading emoticons on instant relay.

Of course, these are just the records for how many minutes are spent on each site – we’ve heard many more versions of which site is the most popular, with Google generally the most-viewed site of all.
